Hello! Bonjour! Guten Tag!
On behalf of the chaperones, we would like to thank all of you for your willingness to broaden your horizons with this excellent travel opportunity with Endress+Hauser! We are excited to travel with you to France, Switzerland, and Germany. We have all been working diligently to create an itinerary that works well for our group and we think that this will be an incredible experience for everyone.
In this first post, we would like to take the opportunity to introduce ourselves ahead of our departure in March. Following our introductions you will also find an itinerary (subject to change) detailing our trip.
Thomas Maxwell
Thomas Maxwell is the French teacher at the high school and middle school, and this is his first year with Franklin Community Schools. Previously, he has taught Spanish at Edinburgh High School and English in Kuji, Japan, both for two years. He is a graduate of Franklin College.
Maxwell has an extensive background in traveling abroad, having visited 42 countries and counting. He speaks several languages, though he is sorry to say that German is not one that he speaks well. Maxwell has previously lived in France, Spain, Italy, and Japan for varying lengths of time.
This will not be Maxwell's first time leading a trip with students. This past summer, he worked as an instructor with the IU Honors Program in Foreign language in Saumur, France for six weeks. He taught French linguistics to 24 students and traveled extensively with them in France. He is greatly looking forward to being one of the chaperones on this trip and experiencing all that it has to offer.
Nicole Otte
Nicole Otte is the Director of Workforce Development at Endress+Hauser USA. She partners within her organization to connect Education and Industry. Prior to joining Endress+Hauser in 2019, Nicole spent 18 years in education. She was an Engineering and Technology high school teacher for 12 years in Columbus, IN where she taught Project Lead the Way Pre-Engineering, College & Careers, Construction, Architecture, and Geometry & Engineering. Nicole then joined Central Nine Career Center in 2013 as the Assistant Director and later transitioned to the CTE Director role in 2016.
When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, the outdoors, designing, creating, making, and baking. Nicole and her husband Joe have two kids: Faith, a freshman at Indiana State studying Sport Management and their Chase, a sophomore at Franklin Community. They have also hosted three exchange daughters from Japan (Nanaka), Thailand (Alisa), and Italy (Elo). Nicole and her family enjoy spending time at the beach and travelling. One of her favorite travel destinations was Hawaii, but she really enjoys anywhere there is hiking and great views. She has traveled internationally to Mexico, Japan, and Niagara Falls. Her dream destination is Italy.
Kathy Thomas
Kathy Thomas is in her third year as an English Language Learner teacher for Franklin Community Schools at the elementary level. She spends most of her time at Northwood Elementary. Before coming to FCS she taught adult English learners through C-9 and high school Spanish in South Carolina and Kentucky. Thomas attended Franklin College and Furman University. She lives in Franklin with her husband and three children.
Thomas’s first international travel experience was in high school visiting England and France with a school group. This sparked a desire to see the world. Thomas had the opportunity to spend a semester in Costa Rica during college and visit much of Central America. She later served in the Peace Corps in Bolivia, and did some traveling in South America. She has been to 19 countries and is excited to add 2 more to her total on this trip. She is looking forward to visiting a German high school and the hikes planned on the trip. Thomas would like to thank Endress+Hauser, Franklin Education Connection, and Franklin Community Schools for this incredible opportunity.
Brooke Worland
Brooke Worland is the Assistant Superintendent at Franklin Community Schools. She joined the district in March of 2019 after working for Franklin College for 18 years. Prior to her work at Franklin College, Worland was a math teacher at Franklin Community High School. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Franklin College and earned her master’s degree and doctorate at Indiana University. Worland lives in Franklin with her husband and two children, who are students in Franklin Community Schools.
Worland and her family love to travel. They plan to visit Ireland, Wales, and England during the summer of 2023. Worland began her international travels in college with a month-long course in Ireland. Since then, she has been to Italy, the Bahamas, and Canada many times. She has traveled with students in the past and truly enjoys the co-learning experience. She is excited to visit new cultures and is eager to learn more about Endress+Hauser. Worland is very thankful for this immersive learning opportunity and appreciates the support of Endress+Hauser, Franklin Education Connection, and Franklin Community Schools.
Matt Worland
Matt Worland recently returned to Franklin Community School to serve as the assistant to the principal at Northwood Elementary. Prior to returning to Franklin he worked in a variety of educational capacities at schools in Columbus, Indianapolis, Greenwood, and Bloomington. Teaching world cultures to seventh graders is one of the many highlights during this time. He attended Franklin College and Indiana University. He enjoys spending time with his family and exploring new places.
In addition to traveling with his family, Worland has spent a summer living in Ottawa, Ontario as part of an internship in the Canadian Parliament. He has also traveled with groups to Italy, Lithuania, and Uganda. Worland is energized by this immersive learning opportunity in the heart of Europe. He is most looking forward to helping students visit Paris, tour the Lindt Home of Chocolate Museum and explore the Black Forrest. He is grateful for the work of many partners at Endress+Hauser, Franklin Education Connection, and Franklin Community Schools.
